It started with a Big Idea
18 June 2007
For several weeks now I have been filling up your inboxes with the EMTww newsletter – a combination of news, latest products and original comment. Both the style and the content is deliberately different from other news vehicles in the electronics market, but yet it still is, unquestionably, ANOTHER news vehicle in the electronics market. So why do it?

In fact, the newsletter was a by-product. Our original aspirations did not extend beyond the web site, and the web site in turn revolved around our ‘Big Idea’. Despite our humble beginnings as a publisher of a monthly magazine in the UK (Electronics Manufacture & Test) it soon became obvious we had tuned into something particular the market wanted when we launched ‘The Shortlist’ as an annual supplement three years ago. Since then it has become the most requested issue of the magazine and a standard source of reference for the industry, albeit on a local level.
Then we started to get complaints from other parts of Europe and beyond – ‘Why are some of our products not included’ or even ‘Why is my company not mentioned’. Usually the problem was immediately resolved. If it is not available in the UK it was not on the ShortList. But the message was clear. People wanted a global list of equipment and materials that they could quickly interrogate and come up with a shortlist of possible vendors that could meet their needs. And now they have it. The ShortList is online and is already proving to be the heartbeat of the site – a standard reference that people are returning to, sometimes just to check up on a supplier’s details, often to plough more deeply into the options available for a particular type of machine.
The joy of the web, from my point of view as well as the readers, is that it can be updated as soon as I hear of new equipment on the market (so if any vendors are out there who have more information for me then please feel free to get in touch).
So the ShortList was the Big Idea. From it came the rest of the web site – again backed up by 25 years of publishing in the electronics manufacturing sector (its our silver anniversary this year!) and then from that EMTww newsletter, which I am delighted you are reading now.
The whole package has been well received, the feedback positive and traffic to the web site gratifyingly enormous. If you know someone who would be interested The ShortList or any of the other information on offer, please forward this newsletter to them. We always welcome new readers.
And finally – if you have a Big Idea, run with it. You never know where it may lead!
