Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

07 March 2007

Loofie Gutterman, President of Geotest-Marvin Test Systems and President, PXI Systems Alliance observes how sometimes being on the inside looking out, we just don’t realize how fast time flies…

I have a young son name Ron and he’s 7 now. From time to time, I meet associates that know him (or of him) and they ask me: “so how’s the baby doing?” “The baby is doing great” I answer and “by the way, he’s not a baby anymore, he’s 7!” The response to that answer is typically “that’s impossible, he was only born yesterday” or something similar.

At a recent PXISA marketing discussion we started discussing the PXISA’s Marketing Committee’s celebration plans for 2007. “Celebration?” we asked. “Well, PXI will be celebrating its 10th anniversary was the answer”. Wow! And most of us still thought that PXI was introduced yesterday…

We sometimes don’t see how time flies, especially when we’re having so much fun. PXI was first introduced in 1997 and was accepted as an industry standard in 1998 with the incorporation of the PXI Systems Alliance (PXISA.ORG). The first years were difficult from the sales perspective, as we had to educate customers about PXI and what it could do for them (Geotest alone conducted over forty PXI-101 seminars in 2001 to educate the market). Then there were the naysayers who claimed that PXI couldn’t really accomplish much in the test and measurement arena and later, when they proved wrong, claimed that it was only a viable product for low frequency and simple applications. It has taken a while but in our 10th anniversary year, it seems that with over 1500 available PXI products (including many for the RF range) and thousands of PXI-based applications, those naysayers have finally disappeared.

PXI is now widely used worldwide with over 60 member companies producing PXI products and applications. Time and again the performance, cost-effectiveness, and the interoperability between PXI’s 3U and 6U form factors and vendors makes PXI the winner in more markets and in more applications - and this is just the tip of the iceberg. PXI’s increasingly wide acceptance in the MIL-Aero market means that applications previously reserved for VXI or custom electronics are now implemented with PXI and with the introduction of PXI Express last year, many opportunities that didn’t even exist before are now simple applications for PXI products.

The future seems to be bright for PXI as forecasted by professional forecasters as well as our own marketing departments. More applications are turning to PXI and more opportunities are available.

Happy birthday PXI…
