Countdown to Southern
23 January 2012
It’s now less than a month until the first big event in the 2012 electronics calendar…

Southern Electronics will be held at Farnborough on the 15th and 16th February. The big news for the manufacturing industry is that there will be a dedicated Electronics Production area in Hall 2. The area has been allocated because of the increased demand for exhibition space from production companies.
It is really encouraging to see this growth against a backdrop of economic uncertainty. The UK can be justly proud of its electronics industry, which continues to compete toe-to-toe with far larger economies around the world when it comes to innovation and high-value engineering. Much, of that innovation and skill is coming from smaller enterprises. A policy of keeping the entry level within reach of smaller companies provides an opportunity for growing companies and start-ups to raise their profile.
As well as firms from all over the UK and continental Europe, the show this year will welcome exhibitors from the USA, Israel and China. Given the broader range of products and services on show for 2012, the organisers are expecting to comfortably surpass last year’s record 6,500 visitors.
The solid core of support from regular exhibitors is helping draw in new participants in increasing numbers. Around 20% of the companies taking part this year are new exhibitors. Some of the new names for 2012 include electromechanical manufacturer Finder, Baran Advanced Technologies, Optris GmbH and Craftec power supplies.
All of the usual show features will return for 2012, including the free technical seminar programme that continues to go from strength to strength. The show hosts two seminar theatres, one focussing specifically on electronics, the other on more general manufacturing and business themes. Presentations will be given by a host of influential new speakers and leading experts in their fields, from The Smart Group (Surface Mount & Related Technologies), BAE Systems, EDF Energy, NAMRC, Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, University of Sheffield and The Composite Systems Innovation Centre, amongst others.
The popular sessions, on How to Succeed at Product Development, Successful Innovation and the principles of Manufacturing Best Practice, will return in 2012. New topics approached this year include How to Sell to the Energy Sector and an in-depth look at opportunities in the UK’s burgeoning Medical Devices and Healthcare technology business. Other topics covered include practical sessions on marketing, Lean, CE marking and many more.
A full list of seminars is available at www.industrysouth.co.uk, together with the pre-registration form.
