It’s NEW - and it’s different
04 April 2011
In the last issue of EMTww I took a look at APEX, an event of national importance to the American electronics industry but also an event with global significance. This week my attention turns to a smaller event that is making a name for itself in the UK - a model that could be the future for exhibitions around the world.

“We [as a country] are a global leader in electronics – a driver of quality and technology,” said Director of NEW Events Claire Saunders. “And we want to put on an event for the whole industry.”
The event in question is the National Electronics Week, which will be held at Birmingham’s NEC on 12–13 April 2011. The objective of the organisers this year is to provide something of interest for all engineers and buyers, from initial design through to final manufacture. At the time of writing, the exhibitors list was getting close to being a hundred strong and included companies involved in components, test and measurement, PCB manufacture, EMS provision, assembly materials and equipment, and numerous other equipment and services.
For those who also have an interest in the products that are produced by the electronics industry, the NEW show is co-located this year with the Gadget Show Live (a British equivalent of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas). Up to 5000 engineers who pre-register for NEW are eligible to go into the Gadget Show Live on the trade and press day (12 April). As the Gadget Show Live is now sold out, with 80,000 tickets sold on the remaining public days, this is the only way that many people will be able to have a look round. Gadgets and prizes can be won on the second day of NEW.
One of the highlights of the NEW show is bound to be the ‘State of the ART’ seminars. These are free to attend and have been organised by Advanced Rework Technology - a training organisation that has delivered training courses since 1988 and a fully accredited IPC certification centre.
The seminar programme for Tuesday 12 April includes:
• RS Components - The growing movement in open source hardware;
• Remploy – The untapped potential - increasing the opportunities for people with disability in the electronics sector;
• Rohde & Schwarz - How we reinvented the oscilloscope - a technical overview of our breakthrough architecture;
• Advanced Rework Technology Ltd- Expand your Horizons the Benefits of Training;
• ARM - mbed : Rapid prototyping for microcontrollers.
On Wedneday 13 April the schedule includes:
• Rohde & Schwarz - How we reinvented the oscilloscope - a technical overview of our breakthrough architecture;
• ESP-KTN Advanced manufacturing for the electronics industry;
• Agilent Technologies Eliminate discontinuities in dynamic current measurements in the range of uA to A;
• ST Micro STM32: Lowest price, highest performance, broadest range of Cortex M MCU’s. What can I do with that?
• Phaedrus Systems - Safely from Conception to Completion.
NEW:UK is also working with Intellect who will be running a seminar stream for the PCB industry and will have supporting companies exhibiting alongside them. The topics discussed will be covering PCB process efficiency and PCB process technologies.
There will also be live demonstrations onsite, roadshow vehicles and the ‘Future Proof Assembly Line’ running boards and featuring new technologies such as package on package.
Claire Saunders concluded: “We hope that with the wide mix of exhibitors, who are all working hard to create a great event for their industry, our features, competitions and added incentives that the industry will come and support this event.”
