SMART move on the other side of the pond
27 September 2010
The IPC’s Electronics MidWest kicks off today in Illinois and once again will excel, I am sure, as both an exhibition and as a meeting place for many in industry.

I am a big fan of the IPC and believe their role in developing standards and disseminating information is of huge benefit to the industry.
However, they are not alone. On the European side of the Atlantic there is another event that equally plays a similar role, albeit on a smaller scale.
The SMART Group is again a favourite organisation of mine. Admittedly there are both historical and geographical reasons for this as I have worked with them in the UK for over 15 years, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it is the largest trade association in Europe for the electronics production industry. The SMART Group’s Conference rounds off its year of activities to mark its 25th anniversary, and promises to be a fascinating event.
Delegates will number hundreds rather than thousands and the conference is a single programme rather than splitting into numerous tracks, but there is enough in the schedule to interest anyone involved in the industry.
The programme includes the following sessions:
• ‘Supplier Chain and Lead-Free Electronics Risk Management’ (Rolls Royce)
• ‘Reliability Issues – The Latest Science Research’ (National Physical Laboratory)
• ‘Mitigation of Whisker Growths in High Reliability Electronics and Spacecraft Hardware’ (European Space Agency)
• ‘Handling PCBs and the Correlation of Cleanliness and SIR Results’ (Rockwell Collins)
• ‘RoHS and Reach; are they Killing the Industry in Europe?’ (Enjaybee)
• ‘New Cleaning and Cleanliness Specs for PCB’s and Assemblies’ (Rockwell Collins)
• ‘Why Do We Clean When We Have No-Clean Process?’ (Dr. OK Wack Chemie)
• ‘Silver vs Sulphur; Can Conformal Coatings Help?’ (HumiSeal)
• ‘Designing Products Protection to Meet Harsh Working Environments’ (Cooper Industries)
• ‘Component Re-Finishing/Re-Tinning, Good Practice and Reliability’ (Retronix)
• ‘Voiding in BGA’S and the Potential Impact on Reliability’ (Rockwell Collins)
The event takes place at the Oxfordshire Golf Club and there is a limit on the numbers that it can accommodate, but I am told there are still places available.
The best first point of contact if you are interested in attending is the web site (smartgroup.org) where you can also see the full programme. The conference takes place on 6 & 7 October.
