Is there anybody out there?

05 October 2009

As you would expect for a newsletter like EMTWorldWide, which does have a fair amount of original comment, we do get a fair amount of feedback.

Tim Fryer

One such respondent recently, although commenting on a different issue (military electronics I think it was), dropped in a throw-away comment about women in engineering. I subsequently looked back over my track record on reporting about the role of women in engineering and found, to my shame, nothing. I put this to my American correspondent, Susan Mucha, who said she had never been asked to write or comment on such issues in her illustrious career. As someone who has operated at a senior level in some big electronics manufacturing organisations, Susan’s take on the subject, along with a number of people she interviewed, makes a fascinating read, which I heartily recommend. The point I wish to make here is not about women in engineering, but that we on EMTWorldWide are always open to your thoughts on what we write and what you would like us to investigate and write about. We do try and provide the best information available, but always appreciate your input about the information you would like, so please feel free to write in.

SMART Group
The subject of information sharing ties in with an event I was going to bring to your attention that take place later this month (on 22nd October to be precise) – the SMART Group 25th Anniversary Seminar. The SMART Group does sterling work in the UK and beyond as an organisation to tackle technical issues through various events and publications. In fact it is they who provide the technical content for our Jargon Buster section of EMTWorldWide. The additional connection with information sharing is the SMART-E-LINK, an email technical forum that is open to everyone, whether a SMART Group member or not and, despite an attack of schoolboy humour taking over last week, is a useful source of engineering tips, business updates and gossip. Now celebrating its 25th year, the SMART Group is kicking off (or should it be ‘teeing off’?) a year of special events with a seminar at the Oxfordshire Golf Club (near Oxford in the UK). The event will have breakout sessions on reliability, environment and business and an interesting looking keynote called ‘Manufacturing Wrong: Case Studies in Non Conformance, given by Doug Pauls and Dave Hillman from Rockwell Collins USA. Anyone interested in going can find out more details on the web site (www.smartgroup.org).

SMTAI
There may be more central locations or ones better placed for the electronics manufacturing community, but there are not many nicer places to visit, at any time of year, than San Diego. One of those rare places where Europeans (like me) feel as at home as Americans. It is of course also the host city for this week’s SMTAI show. I have been running information on this for a few weeks now and so don’t want to repeat myself, but for those kicking their heels wondering what to do for the next two days there is still time to participate in both conference and exhibition. I have included an overview of the event as one of the news stories this week.
