09 September 2009

The SMART Group is celebrating its Silver Anniversary with a series of events, starting with its 25th Anniversary Seminar later this month

Chairman Keith Bryant has announced there will be a ‘year of celebration’ to commemorate the Silver Anniversary of The SMART Group. It will commence with an event at its popular Oxfordshire venue on October 22nd with headline speakers Doug Pauls and Dave Hillman from Rockwell Collins, USA, together with a line-up of speakers, supported by a table-top exhibition. In the evening of this event there will be a celebration get-together.

The morning will kick-off with an introduction from Keith Bryant, followed by Doug Pauls & Dave Hillman’s presentation ‘Manufacturing Wrong: Case Studies in Non Conformance’, and rounded-off before lunch by an Awards presentation by Honorary Vice President Peter Swanson.

In the afternoon there will be three sessions. The Reliability session will be presented by Chris Hunt (NPL), Nathan Barry (Rolls-Royce/Goodrich) and Russell Shipton (ERA). Next is the Environmental Session with Nigel Burtt (Enjaybee), Marion Quarington (MTL) and Mike Fenner (Indium). The afternoon will be concluded with the Business Session hosted by Peter Barnwell (CIL) and Mark Hutton (BPA).

Year of events
Throughout the year a calendar of events is being planned, culminating in a major conference and exhibition next autumn.

One of the founder members of the group, Mike Fenner (Indium Corporation) was invited to the original venue where the inaugural meeting was held in 1984, The White Hart Hotel (now renamed ‘The Great House’) in Sonning Berkshire. He was welcomed by Steering Committee Members Nigel Burtt and Mike Judd, where they reminisced on the milestones and achievements of the group. The Group’s founder member was John Burke who is now based in the USA but is still an active member of our smart-e-link email forum.

The SMART Group was formed by engineers originally to meet the new challenge of Surface Mount Technology. Along the way the vision has changed to embrace all the new technology developments and environmental concerns. These include design, printed circuit board manufacture, all components, assembly, test and reliability, rework and repair.
