NEW tradition
08 June 2009
A Sunday roast. Dancing around a maypole. Curry and chips. All are quintessential stalwarts of our British culture, just as there’s nothing more American than apple pie. But these all took time to be established. Few things simply ‘explode’ onto the scene. With time, they’ve been accepted and embraced.

And within our industry, there are resolutely entrenched names as well as newer, younger players; the proverbial ‘little fish in a big pond’.
A look at EMT’s diary shows a plethora of events that are familiar and established, but there are also some fledglings out there that are getting started and need support and backing to enable them to become recognised and established.
This week, I am taking the slight indulgence of concentrating on a UK event, but one that may become typical of a new generation of events for our industry. Most of this week's newsletter is given over to news related to this event.
Next Tuesday (16 June) sees the return of National Electronics Week (NEW) to Earls Court in London. Visitors to last year’s debut event may recall how well designed the show was and what a good job Claire Jeffreys and her team did of putting everything together. It showcased brand new products from the industry’s leading names, but without attendees, it’ll never become the big British show that it has the potential to be.
This year promises to be bigger, flashier, and more exciting than before and will be opened by Richard Noble (who will be giving a keynote speech in the State of the ART Seminars), and features his Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic land speed record contender at NEW).
The show also has the backing of industry representatives Intellect (NEW addition). Event Director Claire Jeffreys says: “We’re delighted to welcome Intellect on board; its presence lends significant weight to our capacity to deliver unbeatable educational opportunities for the entire electronics industry. Here in the UK, we have so much to be proud of when it comes to our contribution to world electronics markets, which is why NEW, as the national event for this industry, is set-up to celebrate our capacity for innovation and quality. With the Intellect team joining a whole host of industry associations including AFDEC, Cambridge Wireless, IET, NMI and UKEA, NEW is shaping up to be the biggest celebration our industry has seen.”
Intellect Electronics Programme Manager Henry Parker adds: “We have already been impressed by the increased depth and breadth of the content on display this year, especially the emphasis on new areas for individual industry sub-sectors. Intellect is committed to doing all we can to support and represent UK electronics.”
Chairman of Electronics Leadership Council (ELC), Harry Tee, explained why NEW is important to the UK. “The electronics industry in the UK is increasingly important to the national economy. It has changed the world in which we live over the past several decades and will continue to do so in the future. The way we work, the way we play, the way we travel, the way we communicate; all been revolutionised by the electronics industry and British companies have played important roles in these changes. So, National Electronics Week is not just a celebration of the importance of our industry, but is an opportunity to learn much more, to interact with colleagues, to see what other people are doing and pick up new ideas.”
Exception is taking its technology tour bus to NEW, and lifting the lid on topics such as advanced PCB manufacture, the introduction of newer and improved high speed, low loss laminates, and developments in micro component assembly. And electronic design automation software company, Premier EDA, is running a series of three half-day workshops, providing an insight into PCB technologies. Advanced Rework Technologies is returning to NEW too, with a seminar series looking at issues such as process management and green technologies.
This show is a chance to see a variety of equipment, find answers to technical and process problems, and meet new contacts of our multi-faceted industry.
All of the EM&T team will be at NEW, so if you’d like to meet Keith, Tim, or me, just send us an email to arrange a time. I hope to see you there.
