Improving the industry
12 February 2009
SC21 is an industry-led aerospace and defence programme aimed at improving the UK supplier base. It is designed to accelerate the competitiveness of the industry by raising the performance of supply chains.

However, it is important to note that SC21 is not just about supply chain. Indeed, the programme consists of three workstreams; certification and quality improvement, development and performance, and relationships.
SC21 companies work together to improve quality and performance; thus reducing the number of quality interventions; in particular adopting AS/EN 91XX. Furthermore, they are committed to achieving common industry development and performance plans. This includes manufacturing excellence, which focuses on job standardisation, visual management, waste reduction, reduced set ups, and improved material control to improve efficiency. Finally, inter-company communication promotes working together with openness, honesty, integrity, and trust. SC21 uses sustainable, continuous improvement plans to improve efficiency, increase relationship performance, and reduce quality management without reducing product quality. It also unlocks doors to enable companies to convene in the ‘task force meetings’ where everyone can share and learn from experiences. This means that customers, suppliers and competitors collaborate as UK manufacturers to improve, rather than just compete.
Stonewood looks at the programme from both an OEM and a CEM perspective, designing and manufacturing hardware data encryption products and external products for a variety of industry sectors.
