It never rains but it pours
01 October 2007
I must admit I was getting a bit nervous during the summer months about the amount of information that appeared to be being generated by the electronics manufacturing industry. Not so much in terms of news, but just the number of new products for the industry. We all know that the surface mount process is now a mature one – but so mature that there is no innovation?

My idea when launching EMTWorldWide was that by having a weekly newsletter I could bring you the best of the news and the best of the new products once a week, rather than clog up your inbox with information of less relevance on a daily basis. But it was starting to look like there might not be enough products to fill the newsletter even on a weekly basis.
Of course I was wrong, and worrying unnecessarily. The products were all there, possibly even at the point of being market ready while the engineers all sunned themselves on a beach during a well-earned vacation. And now, come the autumn, the marketing machine builds up to speed and I am inundated. Although in my column last week I was claiming that products are released when they are ready, there is more marketing mileage to be made if you know most of your customers are in their factories, rather than on holiday, and that they are reading previews of the major industry events.
THE main industry event is almost upon us of course, and information on the new releases at Productronica (Nov 13 – 16) is building up by the week. So mixed in with the new product offerings over the next month or so will be a selection of the latest show-stoppers that will be making their debuts in Munich. One example is the SI-G200 placement machine from Sony, which caught my eye not because it appears to offer anything revolutionary in its own right, but rather that it is one of a breed of mounters that incorporates the best of the techniques currently available. See
(‘What’s new on EMTWorldWide’).
You will see plenty more over the next few weeks.
And just to make it quite clear, although the expression 'It never rains but it pours' has a distinctly 'glass half empty' feel about it - - I'm delighted when its pouring. Maybe its my Scottish upbringing!
A more immediate personal matter, if you will indulge me, is the leaving (today) of Becky Ash, EMTWorldWide’s assistant editor. Beyond her weekly contribution to the content, she also played in important role in the development and design of the site. But beyond that, and more importantly, it has been a pleasure working with her and I, and all the rest of the team at EMTWorldWide, wish her the best of fortunes in her new capacity in the PR world.
