Getting to Productronica
02 November 2009
Roger Sherman is Messe Muenchen’s man in the UK and Ireland, and has been for years, so when it comes to getting around the Bavarian city and to the show itself, few can match his experience.
By the time you read this, you’ll have both flight and hotel booked and be looking forward to visiting Munich and Productronica. Munich in November can be interesting weather-wise; I’ve known it sunny and warm(ish) and I’ve also seen blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, so I’ve always taken a coat.
Munich airport is very modern and extremely well served by public transport. Terminal 2 is for Lufthansa only, whilst Terminal 1 is for everyone else. Both are well served by taxis, but the S-Bahn train connection is preferable, and cheaper, if you’re going into town first. Take either train – the S1 or the S8 – directly from the airport, which leave in opposite directions, but both end up at the Hauptbahnhof (main station). The S8 can be around 10 minutes quicker, but both trains take around 40 minutes to the city centre. If you’ve got your entrance ticket with you (in the form of a pdf following your online registration at www.productronica.de), the trip is free. If you haven’t, it’s four zones on the ticket machine, costing €9.20. A similar taxi journey can be quicker but it will cost more than €60.
However, Productronica is held at Munich’s trade fair centre, which is to the North-East of the city. It’s a 30 minute taxi ride from the airport – the quickest but most expensive way to get there directly. The fare should be €53, which is a fixed price if you ask to be taken by the Landstrasse (the country road). The only risk of delay is being stuck behind a tractor. There is also an airport shuttle-bus that runs between the airport and the fair. This takes five to ten minutes longer than a taxi, but costs just €6 each way. You cannot miss the double decker coaches that leave the terminal every 30 minutes and will be clearly marked Productronica.
The trade fair grounds lie at the end of the U2 and U7 underground lines and have two train stations, and as the Productronica lay-out is slightly different this year, you should get out here. The U2 and U7 lines both run through the centre of the city. The journey from Munich’s main station (Hauptbahnhof) takes around 20 minutes.
For those in possession of an entrance ticket or coupon, travel is free on all of Munich’s public transport systems throughout your stay during the days of the trade fair. Exhibitors travel free on the days before and after the show, too.
When the show closes, the trains run frequently into the city. Taxis are also available, but take the train as it’s free, efficient, clean and quick.
